Summary

Before starting on the project, I believe that it is important that I go back through my old feedback to remind myself what aspects of my work need improvement, and how much I have progressed since the beginning of my first year in college. This way, I can apply the feedback into my Final Major Project to produce the best piece yet, by using my existing strengths and developing my weaknesses over these next few months.

There are also some important documents to fill out such as my project proposal, daily action plan, and weekly action plan. These are important to complete as I will be reflecting back onto what I had planned to do, trying to keep up with a schedule to make sure I am not drifting away from my plan and keeping myself in check.

Feedback Reflection

Year 1 - Project 1
y1 p1.png

For the first project of college, I didn't really know what I was doing as everything was new to me especially 3dsMax. I struggled with a lot of aspects such as the expansiveness of my writing (specifically my problem solving, artist research, and analysis), showing progress screenshots, and evaluative skills. I wasn't too confident in this project, which is fair considering everything was so new, so I had a lot of things to improve on in my future projects.

Year 1 - Project 2

At this point, I managed to do a lot better in several aspects after reflecting on my feedback and understanding what I needed to improve on. I worked quite hard on my essay, making sure everything was cohesive and that I had a lot of information on my subject (online personas).

I also improved in the problem solving area by providing screenshots and discussing what problems I had encountered in detail and how I solved them. I also managed to link my inspiration to the models and art I had produced. At this point I also started to explain my thought processes to show the reader what went through my head as I did my work, showing the path I took to produce the final piece.

This time, I worked on my evaluative writing to make it show my self reflection and what I had learned more effectively.

Year 1 - Project 3

For this project I was sick for a while so I didn't manage to do as much as I wished. I did complete the environment, but I left the animation for last which is when I got sick, so I ended up having to give up my idea of rigging and replace it with a really simple animation.

I missed the storyboard completely, which is something that was important for this project. I did manage to do my PowerPoint at home so that I was not behind on everything, this experience was necessary for me to understand that sometimes issues that stop me from my initial plan can happen, and I have to learn how to work my way around them without affecting the quality of my work.

Year 2 - Project 1
y2 - p1_edited.jpg

Coming back from months of not using 3d programs during the summer holidays, I was quite stuck and it took me a couple of days to get used to it again, it was also when we had to start using websites to present our work instead of PowerPoints. For better presentation, I should've included an introduction to each page including a summary of the brief and what I worked on for that page.

This time I managed to go into more detail of specifics, like level design, and reflect back on my analysis showing how it had influenced me. I missed the most important section of my audience analysis (customisation), although I touched on it in some other sections. I also realised at this point that 2nd year requires a lot more writing and research.

I held back on some parts of my research due to being too scared that I am doing too much research on something that does not really matter, which I shouldn't have done. Even if it was "too much", it was a missed opportunity to get a higher grade. I learned that I should talk about everything that inspires me even if I think it is irrelevant as it would give me more marks, and there is no harm in trying.

Year 2 - Project 2

I again had issues with an introduction to the project, I showed the brief but didn't do much analysis on it. For FMP, I should properly go through the brief and analyse it for my audience as they do not know anything about it. I improved a lot more in terms of research, matching what was required for 2nd year, but missed primary research completely which is something I must do for this project. I also struggled with customisation again, so I need to make sure I do it correctly this time, for this I will ask for more help.

I also forgot to do some things for presentation, such as linking the wrong page and not putting my Harvard references in alphabetical order. For FMP, I will continuously preview my website to make sure all links are correct and that everything is easy to navigate.

Project Proposal

image.png

Since the beginning of my Animation course, I have gained many skills that I didn't think I'd be able to. I have learnt about how important composition is in art, the visual elements and principles that should be applied for a more appealing piece, the rules of animation, as well as various 3D modelling aspects such as lighting, making sure I have the correct topology, experimenting with and using tools, and animating using both rigging and cameras. I do admit that I still struggle with some of these, however I am able to push my limits in order to expand my skillset, and continuously improve my work which has been shown through the feedback I have received.

I have also had chances to develop my traditional art skills during my last FMP by experimenting with acrylic & watercolour paints, plasticine, and collaging. As we had creative freedom, I wanted to think outside of the box and try new mediums, whilst also applying the knowledge that I had gained from my first year in college. I managed to use both traditional and digital art together in one animation, combining all of my new digital skills with pre-existing traditional skills. This was also the time that I learnt how to use programs like After Effects and Photoshop, these were completely new to me but I got the hang of it quite fast, and it improved my work a lot. It is extremely important to me that I try out programs that are considered "Industry Standard" in their fields, I want to gain at least a little bit of experience in them for the future as I am planning to work as a 3D environment artist in the games industry.

One thing that I had struggled with in my first year was time management. I believe this has improved quite a lot, with me using notebooks to keep track of what I need to do, or what I should focus on. For me to retain this information and keep motivated, I have to keep it on me physically instead of digitally which was the main turning point.

During these 1.5 years, I have experimented using both Blender and 3dsMax. I ended up preferring Blender a lot more due to it being easier for me to understand and use. However, there is the issue of not being able to ask for help in class. I have had to learn a lot of my skills on Blender from other classmates who use it, or from tutorials on YouTube, this isn't too much of an issue as I do tend to learn from the work being shown to me step by step. But sometimes, I do get quite frustrated if I cannot find something, or if I need a verbal explanation.

When I went in for my interview before entering the course, I was extremely nervous and going through quite a rough time in my life. I wasn't sure if I would make friends or fit in, and I wasn't confident with my skillset after missing a couple years of school. I have progressed a lot in this aspect. I talk to almost everyone in my class, I am able to speak up and have proper conversations with others, I even help out with some people's work if they are struggling in aspects I am confident in. I'm extremely proud of myself for this, I never thought I would be able to get to this point.

For my last project, Vertical Slice, I ended up taking a leadership role for my team. My team was passionate and enthusiastic about the project, however very unorganised. I wasn't appointed this role, but I ended up naturally taking it on as I knew that if we had no direction or person to keep us responsible for our tasks, our project would fall apart quite quickly. It was stressful, but I knew it had to be done as no one else was willing to take it on. It's a rewarding role, and it helped me improve my time management even more knowing that I had to stay up to standards for both myself and my teammates.

I have thought a lot about what my Final Major Project should be about. I decided to base it on the afterlife. I think this is an interesting topic, there is a lot to explore, but it is also something people struggle to talk about. I might research different religions, their respective beliefs in the afterlife, and how your morals / actions affect your afterlife. I want to push myself to learn more about Blender, I could experiment with different particles, shaders, and sculpting to further improve my skills on the program. This would help me develop my skills for university, and also further my understanding of the more technical aspects which I have avoided.

I would also like to experiment with more physical mediums such as charcoal, gouache, pastels, acrylics, clay, and markers. With this knowledge, I could apply it onto my textures in 3D making them more interesting or realistic by being inspired from physical mediums. I will also make sure that my research and experimentation heavily impact my final piece. I want to take inspiration from artists like Hideaki Anno and Atlus, history and real world environments that are based on religion and the afterlife. I think I will produce a piece that can help people grasp difficult topics, whilst being visually appealing to make it easier to consume.

Every week I will write a summative paragraph talking about what I have done, any struggles I have encountered, skills that I have developed, and what I plan to do next. I will make sure to keep up with my daily action plan, and will ask peers for their opinions so that I know what is good and what need to be improved. I will try to keep a checklist for every week to make sure I am not behind, and to do work at home if I have managed to not finish something in time.

This will keep me in check and make sure I do not stray too far away from my plan, keeping my time management good and keeping on track.

For my project I'd like to research:

- Afterlife in religion

- Heaven

- Sin and Morals

- Feral Children

- How humans survive in the wild

Project Action Plan

This action plan is made so I can see a general idea of what I am going to do for the entire project. I will reflect on this consistently over the project to see where I am at and what I had planned to do on the plan.

Daily Action Plan & Weekly Evaluation

Week 1

image.png

The first week was quite slow as I was still recovering from the stressful project before, I tried to be calm and just come up with some ideas for my theme, I ended up settling on Afterlife. I thought it would be really interesting to explore it, people can be scared of the topic so I want it to be as digestible as possible. I came up with some mind maps and mood boards to end up with this idea, which took me a day of just putting anything I think of on pieces of paper and Pinterest boards. I also started planning what to write for my project proposal and completing/setting up documents that I needed to. I’ll start on my research next week.

Week 2

image.png

I managed to get quite a few things done this week that will be useful for my project. I made a survey which asks about peoples’ beliefs in the afterlife so I know what is useful to research, I think I will wait another week before I analyse the data, I’ve gotten from it as I hung it up around the building for other people outside of my class to complete. I have started my research of Christianity and their views on the afterlife, as I keep going, I am finding more and more things to explore which is useful, but I should also stick to my plan so that I do not stray off into something I won’t find useful.

Week 3

image.png

Research has been going well and I am starting to get a general idea of what direction I want to go into. I want my final piece so explore the ideas of what happens to people who have no knowledge of God or religion as a whole, how does this affect their chances of going to Heaven? To further extend my ideas and settle on a final plan, I will research extreme isolation in humans and how it can affect them and their personalities too, this will help me understand what kind of character I will lean towards for my main character. I will probably use Blender and other 3D software to make a 3D animation as it can push my skills whilst learning new ones in time for my start in university.

Week 4

image.png

I am finishing up most of my research so that I can finally move onto the design stage. Research has been long and tedious, but it really was helpful for me to understand fully what I want to do. Over the past 4 weeks I have been researching both visual and contextual aspects that can help me develop ideas and influence towards my final piece. Next week, I need to finish up my research completely and start on my concepts and experimentation. I am also getting a lot of answers on my survey which I need to write up when I have the time to.

Week 5

image.png

Was sick for most of this week so I didn’t manage to do as much as I wanted. I did manage to finish most of my research the weekend before, do some concepts, and experiment a little but it was way less than I planned. Next week I really want to crack on with my work and start to do some work at home too to make up for what I have missed out on this week. I tried to do gouache painting but it didn’t turn out very well.

Week 6

image.png

I spent this week experimenting with different materials to get an idea of forms, shapes, and textures. I started on a painting of a seraphim angel using acrylic paint which I will finish later on when I don’t have access to a PC. I also managed to finish most of my cardboard wings which I am quite proud of, I just have to make them white and wearable now. I think that is the most of my experimentation and I am already set on the idea of doing a 3D animation so it isn’t really necessary. Next week I will start on my modelling as I’m already behind on my plan and want to get it out of the way.

Week 7

image.png

Things are going quite well! Since this is the last week before half term, I finished my angel wings as I wouldn’t have been able to take them home and I’m quite proud of them, I also made them wearable. In terms of modelling, I’m starting to work on the character models and will continue to do so over half term to get as much work done as possible. I am aiming to start rendering some scenes by the week we come back, so I have to really stick to my plans and challenge myself with time constraints and daily tasks; this will also help me with time management and so I don’t get lazy. I have also decided to do a pitch presentation when we come back so I will work on this too, I’m scared but I want to come out of my comfort zone and get used to speaking in front of people to get more confidence for the future and for the end of year show after FMP.

Easter Holiday - Week 1

image.png

I pushed myself to do as much work as possible this week because I’m behind on my schedule that I planned at the start of the project. I finished 2 character models which I am very proud of, however I do want to work even faster. This is difficult because I don’t want to have lower quality work for more to show, so I have to keep a balance of some kind. Modelling the clothes was fun as I had to consider the materials that I had in mind and how they would fall and cover the characters body in different ways, I also need to experiment with more colour options even though I quite like the colour palette I have now. For my 1st year FMP, I wasn’t as motivated as I am now, so I see a big improvement on that. I am also working on this project more for showing off my skills and putting together something that I am proud of, rather than completely focusing on grades.

Easter Holiday - Week 2

image.png

This week I focused on finishing up the character models and doing the wolf model. These were fine and I quite enjoyed doing them until it got to the point of rigging, which I did not enjoy at all. The rigs keep messing up and I had to try at least 3 times for each rig which was not fun and resulted in my losing my passion again which I probably will not get back until I finish this task. I know that rigging is not my kind of thing, but I have to get it done so that I can move onto the next stage. I’m quite worried about the time I have left, so I might have to cut down on how much I had planned to do, especially since the rig is being weird. I would like to start animating by next week, and hopefully have a pitch PowerPoint done since I couldn't these past 2 weeks. Working during the holiday wasn't mandatory, but I am very glad I did work because I now realise how small of an amount of time we have left and it has pushed me to discipline myself into working.

Week 8

image.png

Everything was going smoothly until I got to the point of rigging and all of it messed up. The accessories are moving out of place even with weight painting, and the solidify outline is messing up whenever I move anything. Because my plans of fully animating are probably not going to happen, I have to decide on what to do. My options are:

  • Go back to an old save that has my models with no solidify and rig them.

  • Manually remove the applied solidify

  • Switch to a storybook-type final piece

  • Stick with the current version even if I’m not happy with it

This week was the most difficult that I have had so far. A lot of things went wrong, and I got really overwhelmed by that, I broke down because everything got too much for me. In a way I am kind of glad that this happened, it humbled me to not push myself so far and do something that is way too out of my skillset and reminded me of the consequences of doing so. It also cleared my mind and made me think properly about what I should do going forward. I am going to prioritise the scenes that are needed for the story to make sense, and then if I have time, I will animate the others.

Week 9

image.png

This week has gone extremely well. I have been progressing through my animating really fast, and I am proud with how it is turning out. I think I can finish by next week but will probably composite near the end as I need to write up everything that I have done which could take a while and I would like to prioritise writing everything, so I don’t leave it till last minute. I was honestly really stressed out thinking about how I wouldn’t finish the animation in time, but it surprisingly is going smoothly and faster than I had expected it to. I will definitely be able to finish in time as well as animate the other scenes that aren’t necessary for plot that I had still planned to do. Things are going well!

Week 10

image.png

I finished my animation this week which I am really happy about, and pretty surprised that I even managed to finish in just under 2 weeks. Although my animations didn’t turn out as good as I had envisioned in my head, I am still fairly proud of myself for the work that I have produced, and it is definitely the best work that I have done so far in my 2 years at college. All I have left now is to continue writing up all the work I have done with the animating, and to finish the compositing which I will leave for the end. I am starting to get less stressed over my work now because I know I have the majority of it finished, which feels nice.

Week 11

image.png

This week has been quite boring as all I have been doing is writing, but it is an important part of the project so I had to get it over and done with. My focus has been quite bad knowing that I finished the final piece but had to do everything else that I didn't enjoy doing as much, I kind of just had to push through and get it done as soon as I possibly could otherwise I would've just procrastinated and left everything for last minute. With everything now done and out of the way, I am glad I managed to finish without the stress of thinking I won't be able to finish everything in time for the deadline. I am quite proud of this.
